Flight operations kicked off with a low turnout and strict protocols at the Lagos domestic airport as operations commenced on Wednesday, July 8, after about four months of suspension of flights because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to new, flight operations commenced with not less than four airlines flying from the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
It was also reported that other airlines are expected to start operations on Thursday, July 9, and in the coming days.
The first flight from Lagos departed with 78 passengers by 7:15 am from the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) popularly known as MMA1.
Officials of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) strictly supervised passengers boarding their various flights.
The online publication reported that Abuja also had similar experiences as the first day of flight operations was marked by a low turnout of travelers.
While safety protocols were strictly observed as passengers conducted themselves in an orderly manner, sniffer dogs screened bags for contrabands and explosives. Passengers expressed their delight at the protocol put in place to keep travelers safe. They commended FAAN and NCAA for their efforts.
NCAA disclosed earlier that not all airlines will resume on Tuesday, July 8. The flights are scheduled to resume but NCAA said some airlines will not be permitted flight operation.
The aviation control body further disclosed that some airlines have not met the protocols contained in the directives of the federal government as suggested by the presidential task force on Covid-19. Read more:
Similarly, the federal government declared that the last cabin row of aircraft would be designated as an isolation centre for air travellers that exhibit symptoms of coronavirus.
The minister of aviation, Hadi Sirika, disclosed this on Monday, July 6, during the Presidential Task Force (PFT) briefing on COVID-19. Siriki said this was part of the safety measures taken against coronavirus as the nation prepares for resumption of domestic flights.
He explained that cabin staffers have been trained to carry out necessary precautions and protocols in case of any emergency, adding that passengers would no longer be served refreshments to reduce the level of contact with cabin staff.
